Our sourdough start

Almost a hundred years old.
And still rising.

Ours is a true sourdough — originally mothered from a gold miner who worked this valley a century ago. For over forty years we've fed it, doubled it, and listened to its temperament every morning.

It's a labor of love we're happy to share with you.

A friendly note

We now accept credit cards.

We also happily take cash, travelers checks and local checks.

Girdwood Roots

Baked into the valley since 1972.

When Werner Egloff opened The Bake Shop, Girdwood was a quiet, fiercely independent ski town. The roads were rougher, the winters felt longer, and a warm bowl of soup meant everything after a day in the powder.

We've never forgotten those roots. Today, Brian and Isha continue the tradition of hiring local youth, supporting the Slush Cup, and ensuring every skier, hiker, and local finds a warm seat and a full plate waiting for them.

Frequently Asked

Do you take reservations?

We operate strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. If there's a line out the door, don't worry—it moves incredibly fast. Grab a coffee while you wait!

Do you offer gluten-free or vegan options?

While our famous sourdough and sweet rolls contain gluten, we do offer several hearty salads and can modify certain breakfast dishes. Please ask the counter staff for today's specific dietary options.

Can I buy a whole loaf of sourdough?

Absolutely! We bake fresh loaves every morning. However, they sell out quickly, so we recommend arriving early or calling ahead to reserve one.

Where exactly are you located?

We are located on Olympic Mountain Loop, right at the base of Mount Alyeska in Girdwood. You'll smell the bakery before you see it.

What folks are saying

"The sourdough pancakes are legendary. We got here at 8am and the line was already moving fast. Worth every second of the wait. It's a Girdwood institution."
